Sunday Funday ~Excerpt from “The Keepers” by Sameena Bachmeier

It seemed as if they were walking to nowhere, it all looked the same.  Suddenly they heard the rocks on the ground moving behind them.

In a flash, before Mia even had a chance to question what the noise was, Kaly and Faron were behind her, standing between her and a gut wrenchingly horrid creature.  Whatever it was looked to be human but death ridden, almost skeletal.  It had shriveled skin hanging off its bones, no nails on its hands or feet and sunken in eyes that were haunting pits of pure black.  And it stood there grinning, showing off its bloody, pus infected mouth.

As Mia looked at it in horror, staring harder at the creature, she noticed what appeared to be maggots crawling around all over the cadaverous body.  She turned away, instantly nauseous, covering her mouth and gagging.  Just then, it shrieked the most awful high pitched shriek as it abruptly lunged towards her.   Faron stood his ground in between them.  He held his hand up high in the air and squeezed his fist into a ball. He squeezed so hard his knuckles turned white instantly. The creature harped horribly once more, but also this time in pain, clutching its chest, and scurried off into the darkness.

Mia gasped, trying to keep herself composed. “What was that?” she managed to sputter.

“A shadow collector,”  explained Kaly.  “They lurk through out the shadow realm  They come from hell to feed on the shadows trapped here.  That is why it is important we find your sister, if she is still here.”
